Dirty Paws

The artwork embroidered onto these two garments is inspired by the lyrics and narrative of “Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters and Men. Both a look at conflict - in particular World War II - and the use of anthropomorphism within narratives, the pieces are an in-depth exploration of this beautiful song and story. The embroidered garments function as a large-scale, three-dimensional illustration working its way around the body. From the evident battle between “the birds and the bees” to subtle details like skeletons beneath the ground and hidden outlines of Europe, the two pieces are packed with imagery to explore.

“The sky wasn't big enough for them all,
The birds, they got help from below
From dirty paws and the creatures of snow.”

Patch-worked from multiple hand dyed fabrics, including cyanotype patches created using dried flowers, the works really are one of a kind.
